NOR Flash Selection Guide: Capacity, Interface, and Packaging Explained

NOR Flash is widely used in embedded systems, IoT devices, and automotive electronics. This guide covers capacity, SPI/QPI interfaces, and packaging to help engineers make quick selections.
NOR Flash is one of the most common code-storage devices in embedded systems, widely used for MCU boot code, firmware updates, parameter storage in IoT devices, and automotive electronics. Compared with NAND Flash, NOR Flash supports random access, execute-in-place, and a longer service life. Although it lags in capacity and cost, it remains irreplaceable in scenarios that demand code execution and high reliability. Proper selection directly affects boot speed, stability, and overall system cost.
The first dimension of selection is capacity. NOR Flash capacity ranges from 512Kb to 2Gb, with common sizes including 1Mb, 2Mb, 4Mb, 8Mb, 16Mb, 32Mb, 64Mb, 128Mb, 256Mb, 512Mb, and 1Gb. Capacity should be based on the total amount of code and data, with headroom reserved for upgrades. Simple control applications can usually be served by 4Mb to 16Mb; designs with graphical interfaces or complex protocol stacks need 32Mb or more; applications storing large logs or parameters should balance cost and lifetime. Follow the principle of "enough capacity plus headroom" to avoid frequent upgrades while not paying for unused space.
The second dimension is the interface protocol. Serial NOR Flash is dominated by the SPI interface, with variants including Standard SPI, Dual SPI, Quad SPI, and QPI modes. Standard SPI transfers data over a single line and offers the best compatibility; Dual SPI and Quad SPI use multiple I/O lines in parallel to boost read speed, with Quad SPI delivering up to four times the throughput of single-line mode. QPI mode also switches instruction transfer to four lines, further reducing instruction overhead. For systems that need fast boot or frequent reads, Quad SPI and QPI are better choices; for designs with limited interface resources or a compatibility-first approach, Standard SPI is safer. Some devices also support DTR (double transfer rate) and XIP (execute in place) features, which engineers can use according to bus clock and boot requirements.
The third dimension is packaging. Common NOR Flash packages include SOP8, SOP16, USON, WSON, BGA, and 8-pin DFN. SOP8 is the most widely used package, offering easy soldering and rework at low cost, suitable for most general-purpose designs. WSON/USON are smaller, fitting wearables and IoT devices with tight board space. BGA offers high pin density and good high-frequency performance but is harder to solder and inspect. Package choice must account for board area, soldering process, production yield, and supply stability. For volume production, prefer packages with strong compatibility and ample supply to reduce supply chain risk.
Beyond the three core dimensions of capacity, interface, and packaging, several parameters are often overlooked but equally important. Operating voltage: NOR Flash commonly comes in 1.8V and 3.3V, which must match the system supply. Endurance: most devices are rated at 100,000 erase/write cycles, with some industrial-grade parts reaching 1 million. Temperature grade: commercial, industrial, and automotive grades should be chosen by application environment. For automotive and other high-temperature, high-reliability scenarios, prefer automotive-grade devices with AEC-Q100 qualification.
In summary, NOR Flash selection can be reduced to four steps: first, determine capacity by code size and upgrade needs; second, choose the interface protocol by boot speed and read throughput requirements; third, fix the package by board area and process; fourth, verify constraints such as voltage, endurance, and temperature grade. Each step corresponds to a clear application requirement, and following them in order avoids common selection mistakes.
